·            Widecombe Fair - 9am ‘til late in and around Widecombe-in-the-Moor. Run entirely by volunteers to raise money for local good causes, the Fair takes place annually on the second Tuesday of September and attracts visitors from far and wide. There is a full day of events with sheep and horse judging in the Main Ring from 9am , finishing with the Tug-o’-War in the Jubilee Ring at 7pm. You’ll be able to see sheep, cattle, Dartmoor hill ponies, vintage machinery, local produce, and quality handicraft from local artists. Other highlights include Dog and Duck display, Dartmoor Hawking and Terrier Racing. Athletic types can enter the Uncle Tom Cobley Downhill Race, Bale Tossing competition and Tug-O'-War. If you keep your eyes peeled you might spot Uncle Tom Cobley and his (very) merry entourage (hopefully) on his grey mare, lending a hand about the field. This year, Spike Milton’s Lumberjack Show will be demonstrating their sawmill skills and introducing visitors to the world of Timbersports, from competitive wood chopping to the big noisy ‘hot saw’. All this can be enjoyed with a full programme of great music in various venues, including from Ashburton Community Folk Orchestra (see below). Schedule for this year can be seen here, with more information, including access, parking etc, here, and details for competitors here. Entry is £10 per person payable at the gate, or £8 if bought in advance - www.widecombefair.com/buy-tickets . Children under 16 go free and well-behaved dogs on leads welcome!!
