· Dartington Playgoers’ present ‘Diary of a Nobody’ directed by Juliet Harper as their spring production in Studio 31, Dartington Hall Estate. Hugh Osborne’s adaptation of George and Weedon Grossmith’s Victorian comedy of manners, uproariously recreates the trials and tribulations of Charles Pooter’s daily grind of Victorian London. “I fail to see – because I do not happen to be a ‘Somebody’ – why my diary should not be of interest to the public.” Charles Pooter, of Upper Holloway, an aspiring Victorian middle-class office clerk with social aspirations far beyond his status, has decided the world deserves to hear his diary. He has one night, a troupe of actors and an empty stage to impart the woes of his life to anyone who will listen. Adventures with door scrapers, radishes, tradesmen and tins of red paint underpin just some of many joyous retellings of the spectacularly mundane. Buoyed by entertaining enactments, musical merriment and comic cavorting, Pooter and friends demonstrate why nobody need be a Nobody, as long as you have a tale – any tale – to tell.
