Planning for action to raise the issues of the Climate Change emergency.
The ‘Extinction Rebellion’ (‘XR’) is an international movement that aims to promote radical change, through nonviolent resistance and ‘respectful disruption’ and to signal to those in power the existence of an emergency situation that requires emergency action to minimise species extinction and avert climate breakdown. Its central demands are that the Government must tell the truth about the climate and wider ecological emergency, and reverse inconsistent policies by enacting legally binding measures to reduce consumption levels, and carbon emissions to net zero by 2025. Non-violent direct action (NVDA) is at the heart of the Extinction Rebellion. This morning of training covers all aspects of NVDA, including how to decide what kind of action to take, potential legal consequences of actions, how to keep yourself and each other safe, how to communicate with the police, etc.
We want all XR activists to have this foundation before taking action, so they know their rights, their limits and how to be most effective- and stay safe.
Attendance does not obligate you to take action in the future, but will allow you to make more informed choices should you decide to do so.
Donation for room hire, photocopying, etc. welcome but not essential.
